Anthonius Claeissins (c.1538-1613)
This is the earliest known domestic group portrait to be painted in Bruges, and dates from around 1585. The artist Anthonius Claeissins, having studied with Pieter Pourbus, was appointed to the office of city painter in 1570 and was succeeded In this post by his brother Pieter. Together with their father, Pieter the Elder, the Claeissins held between them the monopoly on the production of official portraiture in Bruges from the 1530s until the 1620s. The Claeissins all had, pretty closely, the same stiff, stereotyped style which continued the local, tradition, though combining a few of the more modern developments evolved by Pierre Pourbus. This painting relates most closely to two other works by Anthonius Claeissins. The first, painted in 1574 and now hanging in the Groeningen Museum is ‘The Banquet of Ahasuerus’; the second is his ‘Last Supper’ painted in 1593 and which hangs in Sainte Gilles Church in Bruges. Although ostensibly a family portrait, this painting also has strong religious overtones. It is an allegory showing many of the Christian virtues of family life such as piety, education, fertility and unity. Not only does the painting depict the moment of grace, but it also visualises the humanist’s domestic Arcadia where abundance has been tempered by Christian moderation. Here the reward for piety is plain to see; peace and safety for those dwelling within the tabernacle of the Lord.
