The Virgin in Adoration of an Infant in a Landscape of Hills
Bonifacio Bembo (active 1444-1477) worked primarily for Duke Francesco Sforza, and later for his son Galcazzo Sforza. Their dominions included Milan and the towns of Cremona, Pavia and Vigevano, the churches and castles of which were often decorated by the artist. The elegance of his designs and stereotyping of his figures bear tribute to the Gothic tradition that lingered until the end of the fifteenth century. The landscape in this picture appears to the uninitiated to be purely decorative. From the fifteenth-century point of view it was filled with symbolic meaning which would have been emphasized by an inscription (now faded or removed) on the banner encircling the fruit tree. The Passion of Christ is invoked by the three sheaves of reeds. In the Gospel according to St. Matthew (XXVII, 29) soldiers, in derision, dressed Christ in a ‘royal’ mantle and gave him a reed as a sceptre. The cyclamen which surround Mary, with their red flowers, represent her bleeding sorrow at the Crucifixion. The Virgin wears the luxurious costume of a contemporary Milanese courtier.
