Artist Biography

Dame Laura Knight, RA, RWS (1877-1970) was first taught by her mother, then at Nottingham School of Art, whose teaching emphasised the straightforward, factual rendering of form. Inspired by the Newlyn painters, Laura Knight painted the traditional life of a fishing village of Staithes in Yorkshire where she lived for fourteen years. During the Second World War she painted scenes inside aircraft and munitions factories and afterwards received permission to paint the Nuremberg Trials. She was involved with the Royal Academy, elected an Associate in 1927 with huge publicity being only the second woman to be so honoured.
