Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was born at Limoges, France, Renoir first worked in a china factory where he was trained to paint on porcelain. In 1861 he attended the teaching studio of the academician Gleyre, where he met Monet, and Sisley. His early work was dark and heavy in style showing the influence of Courbet, but in 1868 he began painting in the open air with Monet, with the result that his palette became lighter and his handling freer. He took his subject matter from contemporary Parisian life, becoming one of the leading Impressionist painters. In the 1880s he drew away from Impressionism introducing a more classical manner into his work.
