Artist Biography

Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) was born in Belfast and studied art in Glasgow, London and Paris. In Paris he was influenced by the paintings of Bastien-Lepage, a follower of the Impressionists, and by Manet's style of portraiture. In 1883 Lavery decided to settle in Glasgow, after seeing Sir James Guthrie's painting To Pastures New, and became a friend of many of the Glasgow School, a group of artists who, working together between 1885 and 1896, rejected academic finish and sentimentality for naturalistic style and subject matter. In 1885, he painted the State Visit of Queen Victoria to the City of Glasgow, and the success of this painting led to commissions for official and fashionable portraits. He was knighted in 1918.
