Jean Beraud (1849-1935) – Beraud was born of wealthy French parents in St. Petersburg, Russia, though he moved back to France with his family in 1853. He first studied law, and served in the army’s Garde Mobile de la Seine during the siege of Paris in 1870 before he finally decided to become an artist. He trained as a portrait painter, completing numerous studies of fashionable Parisian women, mostly rather superficial stereotypes of femininity, but collected avidly by clients among the French and Russian aristocracy. As he recorded their lifestyle in such meticulous detail, his reputation was soon established as a painter of the haute-bourgeoisie. During the later part of his life Beraud played a leading role in establishing the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, serving as vice-President, and exhibiting at their annual Salon from 1890 until 1929.
