Artist Biography

Edward Gurdon Dalziel (1849-1889) – Four brothers, John, George, Thomas and Edward Dalziel, formed a company of wood engravers that was to dominate the London printing industry. Simon Houfe, in Five Centuries of English Book Illustration, describes them as ‘the merchant princes of the trade ... whose name appears in almost every major book between 1840 and 1890.’ They produced engraving blocks for several magazines, including Punch, and founded their own printing works in Camden. The Camden Press enabled the brothers to commission and publish their own books, like Dalziel’s Illustrated Arabian Knights’ Entertainments in 1865. Edward Gurdon Dalziel was the eldest son of Edward, and is best known for his illustrations for Charles Dickens’ Household Edition of The Uncommercial Traveller (1870). His father and Uncle George described him in their history of the company, The Brothers Dalziel, a Record of Fifty Years Work, 1840-1890 (1901). He was ‘a young artist of promise and ability. Had he given continued attention to his oil painting he most undoubtedly would have taken a very high position …’ but the allurement of black and white become too much for him, and he laid aside his brush for a pencil.’ He died prematurely at the age of thirty-nine.
