Artist Biography

Marie Stillman (1844-1927)

Maria Spartali was born to a Greek family living in London. She was a celebrated beauty and modelled for the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, and for Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She appears with Alexa Wilding in the latter’s ‘The Bower Meadow’of 1872. An accomplished artist, she studied under the Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown, although her style shows more of the influence of Rossetti. Through Rossetti’s circle of friends she met and married the American journalist and photographer, William J. Stillman. The early Pre-Raphaelites believed in a return to the highly finished, detailed surfaces and subject matter of the Italian School prior to the changes of the High Renaissance. Her gouache painting ‘Messer Ansaldo showing Madonna Dianova his Enchanted Garden’, illustrated an excerpt from the Renaissance writings of Boccaccio. The tiny brushstrokes and the medieval costumes reflect the work of artists like Botticelli, whose paintings Stillman must have seen during a visit to Florence in 1880. The almost frieze-like organisation of the figures and romantic flavour are similar to some of Rossetti’s narrative illustrations, like ‘Damis Amor’of 1859. Marie Stillman exhibited widely until her death in 1927.
