Artist Biography

Daniel Merlin (1861–1933) was born in Audigny, France, and studied painting under the French history painter J. P. Laurens in Paris. Merlin, like Arthur Heyer and Henrietta Ronner-Knip (the so-called Queen of Cat Painters) painted cats to the exclusion of all else. His skill in the rendition of feline personality and his extraordinary attention to detail was unequalled in France for many years, guaranteeing his success amongst the greatest cat loving patrons of art. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes in Paris until his death in 1933.
