Artist Biography

Samuel John Peploe (1871–1935) was born in Edinburgh and studied art under Charles Hodder at the Trustees’ School in the city, and then went on to the Royal Scottish Academy’s life classes between 1892 and 1896. He finally finished his formal art education in Paris at both the Académie Julian and the Atelier Colarossi. It was in Paris that he came into contact with some of the most exciting spirits of the day, notably Picasso, Derain and Chauband. Back in Britain, he took part in the Allied Artists’ Association Exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall in 1906 where he exhibited with Walter Sickert, Lucien Pissarro, Spencer Gore and Harold Gilman among others. These artists considered that they were equivalent to the Independents in Paris whose non-jury exhibitions since 1885 had fostered the rise of Post-Impressionism. Peploe’s earlier paintings portray his known admiration for the works of Franz Hals and Manet in their lush oil brushwork and sharp delineation of light and dark. By the time Peploe painted ‘Tulips' his style had changed to reflect a greater debt to the work of Cézanne, demonstrated by a more structured approach in his application of colour. Like Cezanne, Peploe spent much time experimenting with still life arrangements as they allowed him to mobilise form, line and colour without the intrusion of narrative, thereby avoiding notions of sentimentality.
