Artist Biography

Born in Paris, Paul Sérusier (1864-1927) was a French painter mainly of Breton subjects, a theoretician and a teacher. From 1885 Sérusier studied at the Académie Julian. In 1888, while still a student, he met the artist Paul Gauguin at Pont-Aven and painted a picture under his direction. On return to the Académie Julian, founded the Nabi group with Denis, Bonnard, Ranson, Vuillard, Roussel and others. During the summers of 1889 and 1890 he spent time at the Pont-Aven artist’s colony in Brittany with Gauguin, working under his influence. He continued to spend much of his time in Brittany, from 1893 at Châteauneuf. From 1891-7 he also designed sets for the Théâtre d’Art and. His interest in mathematical proportions and colour theory was reinforced from 1896 by contact with the Benedictine painters of Beuron. He made mural paintings to decorate the church at Châteauneuf. His first one-man exhibition was at the Galerie Druet, Paris, in 1909, and later the same year he began teaching at the Académie Ranson. His book, ‘ABC de la Peinture’, published in 1921, set out his theories of colour relationships and proportionality. He died at Morlaix in 1927 .
