Hans Memling (c.1465-1494) was horn at Seligenstadt in Hesse, Germany, and is likely to have gained his preliminary training in Cologne. Between 1491 and 1460 he joined the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden in Brussels. After the master’s death in 1464 Memling moved to Bruges, becoming a citizen of the town on January 30th 1465, Bruges was an important commercial centre, and Memling received patronage from the wealthy burghers of the town and from Italians living there, who acted as agents for the great art patrons of Italy. In this way Memling work was disseminated throughout Europe, leading to his reputation, according to the notary Rombouts de Doppere, as ‘the most accomplished and excellent painter of the whole Christian world.’ He became one of the hundred most wealthy inhabitants of Bruges, a measure of his extraordinary success.
