Artist Biography

'Marjory and Lettice, Daughters of Edward Wormald'

Arthur Hughes (1832-1915) was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1850 he was ‘converted’ to Pre-Raphaelitism on seeing the first issue of the Pre-Raphaelite journal ‘The Germ’, gained the friendship of Hunt, Rossetti, Brown and Millais and whole-heartedly adopted Pre-Raphaelite techniques. Although not a leader of the movement, Hughes was one of the most important Pre-Raphaelite painters. He was a brilliant colourist, sensitive to the moods of nature, and had a strong poetic sensibility. In the years 1855-65 he exemplified thy Pre-Raphaelite style in its first stage of development with paintings such as ‘The Long Engagement’, ‘April Love’ and ‘Home from the Sea’. This first naturalistic phase was, however, short-lived and, one by one, all the Pre-Raphaelite painters turned to different methods of painting while Hughes withdrew from the mainstream of artistic activity. In 1858 he retired from London to the suburbs where, from 1865, he painted in a more homely style and worked mainly as an illustrator of children’s books. In the late 1860s he produced some particularly fine illustrations for a series of fairy tales by George Macdonald, and for Christina Rossetti’s ‘Poems for Children’.
