Artist Biography

Henri Eugène Le Sidaner (1862-1939) was born in the West Indies and moved to Paris to study under the French academic painter, Cabanel, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. The techniques of the Impressionists, with their activated picture surfaces, colour juxtapositions and plein air study, caused Le Sidaner to reject the limpid classicism of Cabanel, he was particularly inspired by Monet and Manet. In 1882 he moved to Etaples to paint the surrounding landscape, in 1887 making his debut in the Paris Salon. Margaret Anne Stevens describes how, ‘for the rest of his life, he applied a modified form of Impressionism to the evocation of silence, absence and anticipation in deserted landscapes, townscapes and gardens.’
