Henri Gervex (1852-1929)
Henri Gervex was born In Paris and studied under the French academic painters Cabanel and Fromentin. His work is mainly in the classical tradition, with subjects like ‘Satyre and Bacchante’ (Louvre) and ‘Diana and Endymion’ (Musée d’Angers), and he was exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon. Gervex was a friend of Renoir, and briefly experimented with Impressionist painting techniques. This pastel study of ballerinas shows a debt to Renoir’s work of the 1890s, with its slightly acid colours and blurred outlines. During his lifetime Gervex had a number of important commissions, including a ceiling painting in the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, and panels in the foyer of the Opéra-Comique. He also illustrated Balzac’s ‘La fille aux yeaux d’or’.
