Artist Biography

Franz Charlet (1862-1928)
A painter of interiors, portraits, landscapes and genre scenes, Franz Charlet was born in Brussels where he trained under Jean-François Portaels, one time director of the Ghent School of Fine Art and later director of the School of Fine Arts in Brussels. As a teacher, Portaels had a sober approach, believing experience to be more important than theory. He advocated the study of nature, for both its lines and shades, while at the same time he tried to get his students to develop their own sense of composition. After his period of tuition under Portaels in Brussels, Charlet moved to Paris, and like many artists of the period, he studied under Jules Lefèbvre, Carolus Durran and Gérôme. A painter in both oil and watercolour, he travelled in Spain and Morocco with the leading Belgian pointilliste Theo van Rysselberghe, and spent some time in Holland with Whistler. Charlet was a co-founder of the ‘International Water-painting Society’ in 1906. His paintings can be found in public galleries in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.
