Artist Biography

Marianne Stokes (1855-1927), nee Preindlsberger, was born in Southern Austria, studied in Munich and Paris, and came to live in England where, in 1884, she married the artist Adrian Stokes. Her subject matter gradually changed from rustic genre to medieval romance and biblical themes painted in a semi-decorative style, and she sometimes used gesso and tempera to achieve fresco effect, similar to work by Arthur Gaskin and Joseph Southall. As well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the principal London galleries from 1883, she and her husband held a two-person show at the Fine Art Society in 1900.
