Artist Biography

William Edward Stott (1859-1918) was born in Rochdale, and studied painting in Paris under Cabanel and Carolus-Duran. The latter, a highly successful portraitist in the Paris Salon, had an international reputation that attracted many students, including the American, John Singer Sargent. Stott, influenced by the realism of Carolus-Duran, was further inspired by Jules Bastien-Lepage’s scenes of everyday life in the tradition of Millet. On returning to England, Stott lived in Evesham, Worcestershire, and later in Amberley, Sussex. He painted out of doors, producing rural naturalistic images in a manner similar to that of his contemporaries George Clausen and Henry La Thangue. He also made careful studies of figures and animals, usually in chalk. He died in 1918.
