William Hanna Clarke (1882-1924)
In his early twenties, William Hanna Clarke ended his career as a dentist in order to take up painting on a full time basis. He became a frequent exhibitor at the Glasgow Institute, and is associated with James Guthrie and the Glasgow Boys. This loose group of artists had no formal orginisation, but shared a painterly style inspired by a common interest in recording from observation and experience while avoiding any narrative content. In 1915 Clarke moved to Kirkcudbright to join a community of painters that included Edward Atkinson Hornel and Charles Oppenheimer. An article in the Studio Magazine in the following year described how ‘each new canvas when it emerges from his hands shows a marked technical and assured advance … still in the springtime of life, many years it is hoped lie before him.’ Tragically, William Hanna Clarke was killed at the age forty-two in a workshop accident. He was buried in Kirkcudbright with a headstone designed by his friend, the Glaswegian sculptor, Alexander Proudfoot RSA.
