Artist Biography

Ivan F. Choultsé (1877-1939)
Ivan Schultze was born in St. Petersburg, to a family of German origin. He became a pupil of the Russian landscape and marine artist Constantin Krighitsky, but escaped to Paris at the onset of the Russian Revolution. There he adopted the transliteration of his name to Choultsé. He exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon in the early 1920s, and never returned to Russia although his paintings were collected there during his lifetime. Choultsé’s preference for snowy landscapes led him to spend much of his time in Norway and the French Alps. Like Monet, he was inspired by the unifying effect of light and snow on landscape, with their shimmering highlights and blue and violet shadows.
