Artist Biography

Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905), a Finnish aristocrat of Swedish descent, was initially trained at the Fine Arts Association in Helsinki. He later transferred to the University of Helsinki before moving to Paris in 1874. There he studied under the French academic painter, Jean Léon Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Having specialized in painting historical subjects, he became influenced by French naturalism and the practice of painting directly from nature, en plein air, rather than working in the studio from studies collated outside. However, he remained ambivalent to the innovations in plein air painting of his contemporaries, the French Impressionists. In a letter home he quoted the words of Gérôme: ‘... to go in for this madness ... it’s pernicious. Take care. Don't let yourself get carried away ... what is beautiful will always remain so, and they who only seek to follow the fashion will more readily become outmoded than those who work simply and honestly.’ Edelfelt was extremely successful, winning gold medals in the Paris Salon in 1880 and 1882, and in 1885 the French government bought his Portrait of Louis Pasteur.
