Joseph Farquharson (1946-1935)

Joseph Farquharson was born in Edinburgh and studied art with his father’s friend, Peter Graham RA before attending the Edinburgh Trustee's Academy and life classes at the Royal Scottish Academy. He first exhibited at the Academy in Edinburgh in 1859 at the age of thirteen, and his work was shown at the Royal Academy in London from 1873.In 1880 Farquharson spent the first of several winters in Paris, working in the studio of Carolus Duran who had also instructed Sargent. Duran stressed the need to paint without re-working in order to achieve fleeting effects of light and shade on the canvas, and it was this ability to ‘capture a breathless moment’ which characterizes Farquharson’s later work. For the greater part of his working life he lived near Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, where, encouraged by the success of his first snow picture in 1883 (‘The Joyless Winter Day’, purchased by the Chantrey Fund), he concentrated upon painting scenes of snow-bound Scotland – flocks of sheep, shepherds cloaked against the winds, romantic winter sunsets, driving blizzards. These became so popular that most Victorian landscape collectors, and there were many, owned at least one Farquharson, usually with a lyrical and evocative title. In contrast to these often bleak and snow-swept landscapes, he also painted some pictures of Oriental mosques and Eastern market-places blistering in the sun, rather in the manner of Frederick Goodall, following a visit to Egypt in 1885. In an essay published in 1926 Walter Sickert described Farquharson as the ‘admirable antithesis’ to Courbet, whose work he had attacked, and praised the strong narrative content of his work.
