Artist Biography

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was born in Paris, the son of a journalist, he was first a sailor and then a stock-broker. He began painting in his spare time and collected works by the Impressionists. In 1883 he started painting seriously and, together with Van Gogh, became known as a Post- impressionist. He developed a yearning for the rich and intense colours of the Pacific Islands, and in 1891 left for Tahiti where he spent his remaining years in illness and poverty.
