Artist Biography

Thomas Benjamin Kennington (1856-1916) was born in Great Grimsby and studied at the Liverpool School of Art, the Royal College of Art and the Academie Julian in Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other London galleries, and also at the International Exhibitions, winning a bronze medal in 1889. He was one of the founder members of the New English Art Club, which became known as the centre for French influence and Impressionism. Equally at home in both oil and watercolour, he painted portraits and scenes of daily life, particularly amongst the upper classes.
