Joseph Halford Ross (1866-1909) attended Wolverhampton, Leicester and Nottingham Schools of Art, and later studied under the scenic artist, Hart Turpin, at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham. He painted sets dioramas and panoramas for a number of companies including De Beckett and Limmington Co., and Hamilton’s Panoramas. Halford Ross also painted Joseph Poole’s Myrioramas for seven years. These were presumably like dioramas – paintings viewed through a number of translucent screens to convey a realistic feeling of depth. His oil paintings and watercolours reflect his ability to create the realistic illusion of a landscape. He also taught painting at Oakham Schools and Ladies’ College, and was an instructor in carving and modeling at Nottingham School of Art.
