Artist Biography

George Dunlop Leslie, R.A. (1835-1921) was the son of Charles Robert Leslie, a genre painter and friend and biographer of Constable. He studied with his father and at the R.A. Schools from 1856. After a brief period of Pre-Raphaelitism, he specialized in painting landscapes, usually views of the Thames, some historical works and genre scenes featuring children and girls; pictures characterized by their charm and simplicity. Leslie was praised in reviews of the 1870s for ‘the taste of the dresses’ and ‘the grace of the figures’ in his paintings, and for his thorough understanding of the ‘delicate beauty proper to a refined type of English girlhood’, and reproductions of his work were for many years ‘among the leading attractions of print dealers’ windows’. In 1914 he published 'The Inner Life of the Royal Academy', an institution, he knew from boyhood when he was taken by his father on varnishing day to meet Turner and other great artists of the time.
