Artist Biography

Joachim Bueckelaer (c.1530 – c.1575) was the nephew and pupil of Pieter Aertsen (c.1508-1575) who was an important influence in Netherlandish art. Both artists produced similar work and were known for their still life subjects, often incorporating religious scenes. and Bueckelaer painted many market scenes with biblical events taking place in the background. ‘The Adoration’, however, dated 1566, is a straightforward religious scene in the tradition of peasant genre established by Brueghel, and the vivid colour looks forward to the work of Rubens. Bueckelaer was born in Antwerp and became a master of the guild there in 1560. He sometimes embellished work for other artists; most of his own work was done between 1561 and 1571.
