Justus van Huysum (Dutch – 1659-1716)
Although Justus van Huysum painted battle scenes. marine subjects and landscapes, he is primarily remembered for his still lifes. The Dutch passion for the cultivation of tulips and other flowers, and their taste for exotica. is reflected in this still life, recorded in miniscule detail and brilliant colour. He was born in Amsterdam and was given the Freedom of the City in 1682. By the time of his death he had completed some six hundred paintings. All four of his sons were painters, the most famous of which, Jan, became internationally celebrated as the greatest flower painter of the early eighteenth century.
