Joseph Henderson (1832-1908) was born in Perthshire but settled in 1852 in Glasgow, where his influence did much to encourage a new wave of painting amongst younger artists in Scotland. Henderson’s early work was of ‘genre’ scenes of cottage life, but a turning point came in the early 1870s when, during a holiday in Saltcoats, he discovered that his real source of inspiration was the sea. From this time on he concentrated on coastal scenes, at first incorporating groups of sailors or crofters working in the foreground but gradually diminishing human importance until his figures became little more than focal points or splashes of colour in what was primarily a picture of the sea and sky. As part of this development, his palette became much lighter, and it is generally felt that he was at his best with the seascapes of the last years of his life.
