Artist Biography

Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857-1947) was born in Dublin, and studied at Dulwich College, Lambeth School of Art and The Royal Academy Schools before attending Bonnat's studio in Paris in 1880. He frequently went to Brittany where he realised the greater realism achieved by working plein-air. In 1884 Forbes settled at Newlyn, Cornwall, and although not the first artist to do so, became known as the founder of the Newlyn School of painters. It was his pictures, consistently successful at the Royal Academy, that drew attention to the significant work produced at Newlyn.
