Artist Biography

Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was born in Fontenay-aux-Roses, and studied law at his father's insistence. It was not until the age of thirty, after working at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academie Julien in Paris, that he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. He came into contact with many of the great Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, exhibiting at their group shows and at the Salon des Independents. He was elected Honorary Member of the Royal Academy in 1940.
