Artist Biography

Juan de Arellano (1614-1676) studied painting under Juan de Solis in Madrid. His close attention to detail reflects the influence of Flemish still-life painters like Daniel Seghers (1590-1661) a follower of Jan ‘Velvet’ Brueghel. Dramatic use of chiaroscuro (literally translated ‘bright-dark’) predominated in seventeenth century Spain, under the influence of the Tenebristi, Spanish followers of the Italian realist painter, Caravaggio. Arellano’s paintings reflect the dramatic contrasts of light and dark employed in the large-scale religious and secular paintings of his compatriots. The degree of Arellano’s success can be measured in the words of Antonio Palomino, who claimed that he painted flowers ‘with such great art that no Spaniard ever outdid him.’ His abilities were further extolled in a poem published in 1664 by Pedro Alvarez, dedicated to ‘Juan de Arellano, famous Madrid painter, who painted a few flowers to perfection.’
