Viggo Christien Frederick Wilhelm Pedersen (1854-1926) was born in Copenhagen and is likely to have studied there, probably travelling abroad like other Scandinavian artists of the period in order to directly experience artistic practice in other cultural centres like Paris. In this respect they were similar to other young European artists and their paintings were not, as certain critics liked to declare, the work of peasants. Rather, paintings like ‘A Watchful Eye’ show a deliberate degree of naivety with a subject chosen to appeal immediately to the sentimentalities of any spectator, in the same way that their British contemporaries played on the emotions of the Victorian public. Pedersen’s paintings show the influence of the French realist tradition, as personified in the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage, which dominated Danish art in the late 1880s and early 1890s.
