Artist Biography

Matthias Stom or Matthias Stomer (c.1600 – after 1650) was born in Amersfoort in Holland and trained as a pupil of Honthorst at his studio in Utrecht. Like his master he was fascinated by the effects of light and shadow in painting. He spent most of his working life in Italy and in 1630 entered the Guild in Rome. Later he travelled to Naples, remaining in Southern Italy for the rest of his life.
