John Pettie (1839-1893) was born in Scotland and studied at the Trustees’ Academy, Edinburgh under the distinguished teacher R. S. Lauder, along with other notable students of a particularly successful generation, including William McTaggart, Tom Graham and William Quiller Orchardson, with whom he later shared a studio in London. Pettie exhibited in several London galleries, becoming a Member of the Royal Academy in 1873. In subject matter his preference was for historical scenes of a dramatic nature, particularly of the romantic, cavalier period of the Civil War and of the chivalrous world of medievalism. Much of his work celebrated political and military heroes; later he concentrated more on portraits, often depicting his sitters in historical costume.
