Artist Biography

Clive Madgwick (1934–2005) lived and worked in rural Suffolk, and took up painting in the 1960s, finally turning professional in 1973. He exhibited his work extensively from 1975, his wonderfully detailed and atmospheric landscapes achieving immediate success. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and exhibited regularly with them. Although versatile in most subjects he tended to concentrate on country scenes and rural landscapes especially of the East Anglian and Kentish scene. His portrayal of things typically English have led to his work being in collections in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well as Europe, and one of his paintings hangs at Windsor Castle in the private collection of HM The Queen. In later years his travels in Europe widened his artistic scope considerably, and he became as well known for his French and Italian scenes as for his British work. He has won many awards, including the Royal Landscape prize.
