Benozzo Gozzoli (1420-1497)
Benozzo di Lese is generally known as Gozzoli owing to a printing error in Vasari’s second edition of his ‘Lives of the Artists’. He is known to have been studying painting in 1442, and by 1444 was a trained painter contracted to work Ghiberti for three years on the bronze doors of the Baptistry in Florence. In 1447 he became Fra Angelico’s principal (and only known) assistant in Rome and Orvieto. His talent was primarily decorative and in 1459 he was commissioned by Piero de’ Medici to decorate the chapel of the Palazzo Medici Riccardi. Berenson describes how ‘Benozzo was gifted with a rare facility not only of execution but of invention, with a spontaneity, a freshness, a liveliness in telling a story that wakes the child in us, and the lover of a fairy tale.’
