Sir Peter Scott (1909-1989) was the son of Antarctic explorer, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, who died when returning from the South Pole in 1911. As well as being an artist, writer, ornithologist, naturalist and conservationist, Scott was an Olympic sailor, a champion glider and was an accomplished scuba diver.
After studying biology and the history of art at Cambridge University, Scott attended art schools in Munich and London. He held his first exhibition of paintings in 1933 at the age of 24 and became a professional painter of world renown thereafter. Scott also wrote and illustrated some 30 books.
Throughout his life, Scott played an active part in the conservation of the natural environment; he took practical steps to prevent the extinction of species by protecting natural areas and by increasing public awareness. Scott traveled to most of the countries of the world promoting conservation on every continent. Scott founded The Wildfowl Trust in 1946. The Trust is a nonprofit organization devoted to wildfowl research, conservation, education and recreation. Scott was the Honorary Director of the Trust since its foundation. In 1961 Scott helped to found the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and designed its panda logo. He was Honorary Chairman of the WWF International Council. In 1973 Scott was the first person ever to be knighted for services to conservation.
