'Cartoon, The Virgin and Child with St Anne and St John the Baptist'
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the greatest and certainly most versatile figures of the Renaissance. He was not only a brilliant sculptor, painter and architect, but also a skilled engineer and a very fine anatomist and botanist who anticipated many scientific discoveries of the 20th century. He began his career in the workshop of the painter and sculptor Verrocchio in Florence. His principal interest, a passionate curiosity in nature, had become apparent at an early age. He made many drawings of plants, clouds, hands and folds of cloth.
