Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-69) was born in Leiden, Holland, he moved to Amsterdam in 1632, where he married the wealthy Saskia van Uylenburch. During this time he enjoyed great success and prosperity. However, by 1640 his popularity was waning and after the death of his wife and mother, he and his son Titus were forced to adopt a humbler mode of life and he finally died in poverty with almost no recognition. His output included paintings, drawings and etchings. His portraits reveal a great understanding and sympathy for his sitters and his intense observation can be seen in the many self-portraits, which cover forty years of his life.
