Richard Ranft (1862-1931) was born at Pleinpalais, in Switzerland. He studied in Geneva under Sordet, A. de Mont and Courbet, later working in Paris as a painter and engraver. Apollinaire, in an article published in June 1910, describes the ‘original coloured etchings by a man who in England is considered to be the best interpreter of Turner ... His love of masks, ballerinas, and clowns is as tender as the feeling that inspires him to engrave an old barge or a windmill on a cliff.’ He also illustrated a number of books, including Gustave Khan’s ‘Contes hollandais’. Ranft exhibited in the Salons des Indepéndants in Paris, and became a member of La Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
