Richard Wane (1852-1904) painted mainly coastal scenes and rustic village subjects. He was born in Manchester where he studied under Frederic Shields and at the Manchester Academy. Lord Leighton praised his pictures, and they were successful in both provincial and London galleries, including the Royal Academy where he exhibited from 1885 to 1904. Wane moved south in 1890 and he painted frequently in Sussex and on the South Coast. Following a bout of ill-health, he returned to Liverpool, in 1896, where he was President of the Sketching Club.
