Artist Biography

Carl Larsson (1853-1919), the son of a servant, was brought up in the slums of Stockholm. From an early age he was determined to become an artist, and in 1866 began to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, supporting himself by working part-time as a newspaper reporter and comic illustrator. In 1877 he moved to Paris where his historical subject matter, painted in the late Romantic style, failed to gain him access to the Salon. Five years later he joined a colony of Scandinavian artists at Grez-sur-Loing. He began using watercolours for a lighter, more simple effect, usually painting a single figure placed off centre and viewed slightly from above in the manner of a Japanese print. He met and married his compatriot and fellow artist, Karin Bergoo, and the couple returned to Sweden in 1885. He later became famous for his series of books illustrating his idyllic family life at Sundborn, a log cabin in Dalarna inherited by his wife in 1889.
