Artist Biography

James Jacques Joseph Tissot (1836-1902)
Tissot was born in Nantes but after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 he settled in England. Although he painted a number of pictures of the Life of Christ he is primarily remembered for his paintings of fashionable society. He particularly loved to paint women, delighting in picking out every detail of feminine dress. Many of his pictures are set on ships, recalling his childhood in the sea port of Nantes.
