Artist Biography

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was born in Delft and died there at the age of 43. In 1653 he entered the Delft Painters' Guild, but it is not certain whether he had any formal art training. He does not appear to have ever sold a painting and his total output numbers less than forty works. The majority of his paintings are genre subjects: quiet domestic interiors with one or two figures. After his death his work remained in obscurity until the 1880s.
