Artist Biography

William McTaggart (1835-1910) William McTaggart was born in Aros on the west coast of Mull of Kintyre. When he was sixteen he began seven years of hard study at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh, and in 1859 was made an Associate of the Royal Scottish Acaqemy at the early age of twenty-four. Throughout his career he painted the scenery of Scotland’s Atlantic coast, usually with children in the foreground, but his style developed through three distinct periods. From 1859, impressed by the works of the Pre-Raphaelite painters, his paintings appear full of detail and highly finished, but gradually his style broadened and, in the course of the 1870s, especially after 1875, he evolved quite independently his own form of Impressionism. Like the French Impressionists, he painted the effects of light and atmosphere, but unlike them he painted movement, particularly in turbulent weather conditions. The final late stage of his work can be called Expressionist; from the 1880s he worked with increased rapidity, always in front of his subject, abandoning underpainting and using an intense ‘shorthand’ of brushstrokes and colour.
