Artist Biography

Bruno Liljefors (1860-1939) was a student at the Royal Academy in Stockholm from 1879 to 1882. A fellow student and friend of Anders Zorn, he later said that he learned more from Zorn than the professors. He left the Academy early to go to Düsseldorf, Italy and France. His exhibitions, both in Sweden and abroad, met with immediate success. He became a friend of Gustaf Kolthoff, head of the Zoological Institute of Uppsala and a forerunner of modern ecologist theories, and their work together probably had a deciding influence on Liljefors’ view of nature. He broke with the tradition of painting animals against arbitrarily chosen backgrounds and depicted them instead as integral parts of, and interdependent with their natural surroundings.
