Henri Lebasque (1865-1937) was born in 1865 and first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts d’Anger. Arriving in Paris in 1886, he became a pupil of Léon Bonnat, then of Jacques-Fernand Humbert, whom he assisted in the decoration of the Pantheon. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1896 and eventually became a life member of the committee. Henri Lebasque painted in a light and joyful manner, spontaneously and without apparent effort. In everything he painted he instilled a unique charm. In 1924 Lebasque settled in Cannet with his family who frequently featured in his paintings. He was a friend and neighbour of Pierre Bonnard; he painted some similar subjects but although he exhibited with the Fauves, he was never truly one of them. His friendship with Matisse, Rouault, Dufy and Valtat did not influence his work and he maintained a subtle, individual style in his painting throughout his career. He worked on the decorations of the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and showed his work at various Paris exhibitions until his death in 1937.
