Artist Biography

John Henry Lorimer (1856-1936) was born in Edinburgh, the son of Professor James Lorimer LLD. He was university educated before attending the Royal Scottish Academy, where he studied under McTaggart and Chalmers. He also spent a year in Paris in the atelier of the French portrait painter Carolus-Duran. Lorimer initially specialized in portraits and still lifes, later turning to scenes of contemporary life. Sir J. L. Caw, in his book ‘Scottish Painting 1620-1908’ (1908) described how none ‘except Sir W. Q. Orchardson ... had painted the more refined and cultured side of modern society, until Lorimer took up figure subjects and gave delightful glimpses of life as it passes in many a Scottish home.’ He was concerned with the effects of light, his oil paintings and watercolours demonstrating an ability to convey the impression of light flooding into interiors where children play. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1873, and was elected a full member in 1900. He died in Edinburgh in 1936.
