Artist Biography

George Goodwin Kilburne (1839-1924) was born in Norfolk, and he initially trained as a wood engraver. He was apprenticed to the Dalziel brothers in London, later actually marrying the daughter of Robert Dalziel. From 1863 he exhibited works at the Royal Academy, achieving great popularity by reproducing his pictures as prints. The majority of his paintings are genre works, set most often in the seventeenth century. However he was also celebrated for his pictures of young ladies in contemporary costume, his works revealing a lively eye for changes in fashion and an interest in human behaviour. He exhibited extensively and one of his most important outlets was the Grosvenor Gallery, the focus pf the Aesthetic Movement. Kilburne was greatly influenced by this important movement, falling for what Gilbert and Sullivan rather unfairly caricatured as the ‘greenery-yallery, Grosvenor Gallery’ style, a style which in retrospect seems unusually alive to the sensual possibilities of line and subtle colour.
